The Detailing Process
Detailing involves deep cleaning, decontamination, and optional paint enhancement. It requires inspection and careful methodical work.
1. Initial Inspection
Every detailing consideration begins with an assessment. We look at the overall condition of the clear coat, noting areas of heavy wash marring, deeper scratches, and existing protection levels. This determines what processes may improve the appearance and ensures realistic expectations are set.
2. Decontamination Phase
Even after a thorough contact wash, paintwork often feels rough to the touch. This is due to bonded contaminants common in the UK environment. Decontamination is necessary before any polishing or coating can occur.
- Chemical Tar Removal: Using specific solvents to safely dissolve road tar spots flicked up from summer roads or recent roadworks.
- Chemical Iron Fallout Removal: Applying reactive cleaners that dissolve microscopic iron particles (from brake dust and railways) embedded in the clear coat.
- Physical Clay Bar Treatment: Using detailing clay with a lubricant to mechanically shear off remaining bonded surface contaminants, leaving the paint feeling smooth like glass.
3. Paint Assessment & Measurement
Once perfectly clean, the paint is dried and inspected under high-intensity detailing lights to reveal the true extent of swirl marks and defects. Where appropriate, paint depth gauges are used to measure the thickness of the clear coat to ensure polishing can be undertaken safely.
4. Machine Polishing (Enhancement)
Polishing is an optional step that involves carefully removing microscopic layers of clear coat to level out scratches and wash marring. We avoid claiming "perfect paint correction" as results always depend on the vehicle's age, clear coat hardness, and depth of existing damage.
- Single-Stage Enhancement: Using a fine polish and specific pad combination to increase gloss and reduce the visibility of light swirling. This is a common, practical approach for many daily driven vehicles.
- Multi-Stage Correction: A more intensive process using heavier cutting compounds followed by refining polishes to tackle deeper defects. This is rarely suitable or necessary for standard routine maintenance.
5. Panel Preparation & Protection
After polishing, the paint must be wipe down with specific panel preparation fluids (IPA mixtures) to remove polishing oils. This ensures the clear coat is completely bare, allowing sealants or ceramic coatings to bond correctly for maximum effectiveness.
