Exterior Safe Washing
Techniques designed to clean effectively while mitigating the risk of inflicting wash marring and swirl marks on your vehicle's paintwork.
The Importance of the Pre-Wash
In the UK, vehicles accumulate a tough layer of traffic film, especially from motorway driving in wet conditions. If a sponge or mitt is taken directly to this grime, it acts as an abrasive, causing micro-scratches.
A safe wash process begins without touching the paint:
- Wheel Cleaning: Addressed first using dedicated non-acidic cleaners and soft brushes to prevent brake dust from splashing onto clean panels later.
- Citrus Pre-cleaners: Applied to lower halves and bug-splattered fronts to break down stubborn dirt.
- Snow Foam: A thick layer of foam is applied and left to dwell. As gravity pulls it down, it safely lifts larger dirt particles away from the surface.
- High-Pressure Rinse: Thoroughly rinsing away the pre-wash chemicals and the loosened dirt before any contact is made.
The Contact Wash
Once the heaviest dirt is removed, the contact wash safely cleans the remaining traffic film.
- Two-Bucket Method: Utilizing one bucket for a pH-neutral shampoo solution and a second bucket with clean water for rinsing the wash mitt.
- Grit Guards: Placed at the bottom of buckets to trap dirt and prevent it from being picked back up by the mitt.
- Microfibre Wash Mitts: Preferred over traditional sponges as their deep pile draws dirt away from the surface rather than dragging it across the paint.
- Top-Down Approach: Washing the cleaner upper sections (roof, bonnet) first, and leaving the dirtiest lower sections until last.
Safe Drying Techniques
Drying is a critical stage where damage often occurs if done incorrectly.
- Filtered Air Blowers: The safest method, using air to force water out of crevices, grilles, and mirror housings, requiring zero contact with the paint.
- Plush Microfibre Towels: If towel drying, using thick, dedicated drying towels and employing a 'pat-drying' method rather than dragging the towel heavily across panels.
- Drying Aids: Occasionally utilizing a spray sealant during the drying phase to add lubrication and a temporary layer of protection.
