Adapting your vehicle care habits to the changing conditions on UK roads, from winter salt to summer dust.

Winter Protection

The harshest time for UK vehicles. The priority shifts from perfect aesthetics to preserving the vehicle from corrosive elements.

  • Road Salt & Grit: Frequent rinsing is essential, particularly focusing on lower doors, wheel arches, and alloy wheels to prevent salt accumulation.
  • Damp Interiors: Minimising moisture brought in on footwear to reduce internal window condensation and prevent mildew.
  • Pre-Winter Sealants: Applying durable polymer sealants or ensuring ceramic coatings are decontaminated in late Autumn to provide a strong sacrificial layer through the winter months.

Spring Refresh

Recovering from winter and preparing for variable weather conditions.

  • Deep Decontamination: Spring is the ideal time to chemically remove the iron fallout and embedded winter grime that routine washing couldn't shift.
  • Tree Sap & Pollen: As foliage returns, vehicles parked outside become covered in sticky sap and fine pollen dust. These should be washed off promptly before sunshine bakes them onto the clear coat.
  • Interior Clean: Thorough extraction of winter mud from carpets and mats.

Summer Maintenance

Higher temperatures bring different challenges, primarily related to environmental impacts and UV exposure.

  • Bug Splatter: Insect remains are highly acidic. If left on a hot bonnet, they can quickly etch into the clear coat causing permanent marks. Prompt removal with dedicated citrus cleaners is advised.
  • Safe Washing: Avoid washing in direct sunlight or when panels are hot to touch, as shampoo can dry too quickly and cause water spotting.
  • UV Protection: Ensuring protective waxes or sealants are topped up to help reflect UV rays and prevent paint oxidisation (fading).

Autumn Preparation

Dealing with increasing rainfall and decaying environmental fallout.

  • Fallen Leaves: Wet leaves left on horizontal panels release tannins that can stain paintwork. More importantly, they block scuttle panel drains, potentially leading to water ingress into the cabin.
  • Glass Repellency: Applying hydrophobic glass sealants to windscreens to improve visibility during heavy autumn downpours and reduce wiper judder.
  • Inspection: Checking the durability of existing paint protection before the winter conditions arrive.
