Education on waxes, sealants, and ceramic coatings. We focus on how they function, what they can realistically achieve, and the maintenance they require.
Important Context
We never claim that any coating provides "permanent protection" or makes a vehicle scratch-proof. All protective layers require careful maintenance. Their longevity depends entirely on preparation, product choice, annual mileage, weather exposure, your washing routine, and storage conditions.
Traditional Waxes & Sealants
Historically the standard for vehicle protection. They provide a temporary sacrificial layer over the clear coat.
- Carnauba Waxes: Offer a warm gloss and good water beading, but degrade relatively quickly, especially when exposed to harsh UK winter conditions and alkaline traffic film removers.
- Polymer Sealants: Synthetic alternatives that offer longer durability than waxes and strong resistance to UV and mild chemicals. They are a practical choice for seasonal preparation.
Ceramic Coatings
Liquid polymer solutions containing silicon dioxide (SiO2) that cure to form a hard, semi-permanent bond with the vehicle's clear coat.
- Hydrophobic Properties: They create high surface tension, causing water to bead and roll off, taking dirt with it. This makes routine washing significantly easier.
- Chemical Resistance: They offer a stronger barrier against bird lime, tree sap, and road salts compared to traditional waxes.
- Gloss Enhancement: When applied to properly prepared and polished paint, they lock in the finish and enhance the optical clarity.
The Reality of Ceramic Maintenance
A common misconception is that ceramic coated cars do not need washing. In reality, while they are easier to clean, they must be washed regularly.
If road traffic film, salt, and grime are allowed to build up on the surface, they mask the coating's hydrophobic properties. The coating is still underneath, but the dirt layer prevents it from performing. We advise on proper maintenance washing routines using pH-neutral shampoos to ensure protective coatings continue to function effectively.
